The Office of Strategic Communication’s Media Fellows program gives UW–Madison faculty the opportunity to focus deeply on media training and engagement over the course of a semester. Over fall and spring terms, a small cohort of campus faculty experts comes together for intensive media training that includes:
- An overview of the media landscape
- Mock interview practice
- Workshopping
- Strategic interview techniques
Other topics may include issues management and anticipation, op-ed writing and placement, on-camera technique, connecting policymakers with faculty research, and general research outreach.
Media Fellows members are nominated by their colleagues or campus communicators. They can also nominate themselves.
Past participants
Media Fellows and their research have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, STAT, New Yorker, WPR, Scientific American, Clean Wisconsin, CNN, and many more.
Time commitment
Each cohort meets six times a semester for 90 minutes, every two to three weeks. Exact dates are determined by the cohort’s schedule availability at the beginning of the semester.
Selection process
Media Fellows members are nominated by their colleagues or campus communicators and deans. They can also nominate themselves.

This training was tremendously helpful. Engaging with the media is an important element of public impact scholarship.
Consistent with the Wisconsin Idea, I want my research to serve the public and I am committed to making my research findings broadly accessible. This training provided crucial guidance on how to do so effectively.
