Communities of Practice

There are many active communities of practice for communications and marketing professionals at UW–Madison. Join them to share ideas, stay informed, and connect with peers who do similar work across campus.

Campus Communicators

Campus Communicators is an informal group of UW–Madison professionals who convey information to students, alumni, faculty/staff, media, and other audiences. It meets periodically during the school year. An email discussion list exists for sharing announcements about upcoming meetings and to facilitate discussion among members of the group. Join or unsubscribe from the Campus Communicators list.

AV Club

The UW AV Club is an informal collaborative group for UW–Madison’s video and multimedia community. It passes along tech tips, shares information, and answers questions. From time to time, the AV Club has even shared personnel and gear. UW–Madison and Universities of Wisconsin faculty, staff, and student employees are welcome as members. Request to join the UW AV Club Facebook group.

Research Communicators

Research Communicators brings together the people at UW–Madison who describe with words, pictures, and video the work done by scientists on campus. Quarterly meetings address common challenges and opportunities, introduce new science communicators to their campus colleagues, and connect journalists with science stories. Announcements and discussions appear on an email list. To join the Research Communicators list, please contact Chris Barncard in the Office of Strategic Communication.

#UWSocial

#UWSocial is a group of communicators from schools, colleges, and departments across campus dedicated to sharing great social media content and resources for the UW–Madison community and beyond. Request to join the #UWSocial Facebook group or the email list.

UW–Madison Photographers

The UW–Madison Photographers’ Community of Practice brings together those who create or direct the use of photography across campus, to share knowledge, perspectives, and ideas. Topics include techniques and technology, digital asset management, ethics and policies, inspirational work, and trends in visual communication. The group holds occasional meetings and meet-ups, and maintains a Google Group. To join, contact Michael King in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Executive Communicators

This is a group of experienced communicators from across campus whose roles include development of high-level institutional messages for university leaders. Members have expertise in speechwriting, blog writing, video scripting, creating effective visuals, and supporting top executives. The community of practice meets quarterly to share knowledge, challenges, ideas, and best practices, and to identify ways to align messaging and leverage one another’s work to deepen our ability to communicate effectively with multiple constituencies. Contact Amanda Todd for additional information.

Campus Designers

Campus Designers is a peer forum for campus designers to compare notes and share ideas. All UW–Madison employees with hands-on graphic design responsibilities of any type are invited to participate in this informal community of practice. The group meets periodically during the school year. A Campus Designers email discussion list exists for sharing announcements about upcoming meetings and to facilitate discussion among members of the group. To sign up for the email list or to find out more, contact Danielle Lawry or Kelly O’Loughlin in the Office of Strategic Communication.

Event Producers

The Event Producers Group is for UW–Madison employees who plan events, meetings, and conferences on campus. It meets monthly for topical presentations, social networking, and/or site visits, and hosts an active Microsoft Teams channel for instant connection and support. A campuswide steering committee consists of 10 volunteers who curate programming, host the Teams channel, and support initiatives to ease the load of event producers on campus.
